Peter Lino Barili Memorial Scholarship
The preeminent award offered by Sigma Beta, the Peter Lino Barili Memorial Scholarship is given every semester to the active brother who best exemplifies the two guiding tenets of the fraternity - Loyalty & Brotherhood.
Twice a year, one brother is selected by his peers to receive this prestigious award, given in honor of Peter Lino Barili ‘68. Peter died fighting for what he believed in, on February 21st, 1971 during his service in the Vietnam war. Peter was a Sigma Beta brother who so staunchly encapsulated what it means to be a good man, citizen, and friend, that his brothers Ed Shapiro ‘68 and John Lindahl ‘68 created and awarded the first scholarship in 1972 to honor his memory and his example of living life to the fullest.
What does Sigma Beta mean to you?
To me, Sigma Beta is about being part of a group, one that helps push me to do better everyday. It’s a mix of building friendships, learning from each other, and growing together. It is a community I will be a part of forever and something to look back on in future years.
What was your reaction to winning the Barili?
I was super honored. It’s a great feeling to know that the people around me respect and appreciate how I act. I felt proud, excited, and even more motivated to step up and contribute to the group.
